Predictions of AI-powered models strictly trial-specific, have no generalisability: Study

[ad_1] AI-powered prediction models made accurate predictions within the trial they were developed in, but gave "random predictions" outside of it, according to a new research. Researchers said the study showed that generalisations of predictions of artificial intelligence-based models across different study centres cannot be ensured at the moment and that these models were "highly context-dependent". Results of the study have been published in the journal Science.Pooling data from across trials too did not help matters, the team found. The team of researchers, including those from the universities of Cologne (Germany) and Yale (US), were testing the accuracy of AI-driven models in predicting the response of schizophrenic patients to antipsychotic medication across several independent c...

AI threat alert: Artificial intelligence risks need to be better understood and managed

[ad_1] While artificial intelligence (AI) is capable of transforming societies in positive ways, it also presents risks that need to be better understood and managed, new research has warned. Joe Burton, a professor at Lancaster University, UK, contends that AI and algorithms are more than mere tools used by national security agencies to thwart malicious online activities. In a research paper recently published in the Technology in Society Journal, Burton suggests that AI and algorithms can also fuel polarisation, radicalism, and political violence, thereby becoming a threat to national security themselves. “AI is often framed as a tool to be used to counter violent extremism. Here is the other side of the debate,” said Burton. The paper looks at how AI has been securitised throughout...

Asteroid findings from specks of space dust could save the planet: Research

[ad_1] New research into the durability and age of an ancient asteroid made of rocky rubble and dust, revealed significant findings that could contribute to potentially saving the planet if one ever hurtled toward Earth. New research into the durability and age of an ancient asteroid made of rocky rubble and dust, revealed significant findings that could contribute to potentially saving the planet if one ever hurtled toward Earth. Curtin University-led research into the durability and age of an ancient asteroid made of rocky rubble and dust, revealed significant findings that could contribute to potentially saving the planet if one ever hurtled toward Earth. The international team studied three tiny dust particles collected from the surface of ancient 500-metre-long rubble pile a...

First Usage Of Fire To Cook Food Happened 7,80,000 Years Ago In Israel: Study

[ad_1] Today, we find multiple modes for cooking our everyday food. We use a gas stove, induction cooktop, microwave oven, OTG etc to prepare different types of dishes. But ages back, only fire was the mode of cooking. In fact, it was considered to be one of the first steps taken towards human civilization. Until now, we knew that the earliest evidence of cooking dates back to approximately 170,000 years ago. But recent research in this regard claims, it was around 7,80,000 years ago that human beings first used fire to cook food; that too in Israel.According to a report in ANI, this scientific discovery was conducted by researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HU), Tel Aviv University (TAU), and Bar-Ilan University (BIU), in collaboration with the Steinhardt Museum of Natura...

Is Coffee Good Or Bad – See What This New Study Says

[ad_1] Almost all of us have a fetish for our daily cup of coffee (or cups of coffee) but there is always a nagging sense of guilt that makes the experience less than perfect. Time and again, we have been told how caffeine is not good for us, especially coffee, which contains too much of the caffeine. But, contradicting this notion, there have also been some studies that say that coffee is actually good for heart health. And now there's another study that claims drinking coffee may even lower the risk of death.  As reported by ANI, the study found that compared to non-coffee drinkers, adults who drank a moderate amount of coffee every day were less likely to die during a 7-year follow up period. The findings stood for both unsweetened and sweetened coffee with sugar. Published in the Ann...

Astronomers Discovers 2 Super-Earths Orbiting A Distant Star

[ad_1] The astronomers have so far spotted around 5,000 exoplanets. (Representative Image)In a recent discovery, astronomers have spotted 2 new exoplanets orbiting a star located 100 light years away from Earth, according to a report by Space.com. The two new exoplanets are called Super-Earths, which is around 30 per cent larger than Earth, and orbit the dwarf star in 2.7 Earth days. The first planet is designated as LP 890-9b and second as LP 890-9c. The second planet is 40 per cent larger than Earth, and it completes the orbit in just 8.5 Earth days. Astronomers have noted that the second planet exists in the habitable zone of the host star.  The study was published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics. The celestial objects were identified as exoplanets by the Transiting Exopla...
