Nvidia upgrades processor as rivals challenge its AI dominance

[ad_1] Nvidia Corp., the world's most valuable chipmaker, is updating its H100 artificial intelligence processor, adding more capabilities to a product that has fueled its dominance in the AI computing market. The new model, called the H200, will get the ability to use high-bandwidth memory, or HBM3e, allowing it to better cope with the large data sets needed for developing and implementing AI, Nvidia said Monday. Amazon.com Inc.'s AWS, Alphabet Inc.'s Google Cloud and Oracle Corp.'s Cloud Infrastructure have all committed to using the new chip starting next year. The current version of the Nvidia processor — known as an AI accelerator — is already in famously high demand. It's a prized commodity among technology heavyweights like Larry Ellison and Elon Musk, who boast about their abilit...

Broadcom and VMWare Say $61 Billion Deal Will Close ‘Soon’

[ad_1]  Broadcom Inc. said on Monday that it expects its $61 billion deal to buy software maker VMware Inc. to close before a November deadline, working to reassure investors amid concerns that a slowdown in China's review process could quash the deal. Broadcom and VMware didn't say how close they might be to an approval from Chinese regulators — the last major hurdle to closing the deal, but they said in a statement on Monday that there is “no legal impediment” to closing under US merger regulations. The deal agreement between the companies expires on Nov. 26.  If the merger is terminated because the takeover doesn't gain regulatory approvals in time, Broadcom may be on the hook for a $1.5 billion termination fee under the terms of the agreement. AI revolution in video games has industry players treading warily

[ad_1] From generating storylines to coding entire games to turning ideas into animation, artificial intelligence is front and centre at Gamescom, one of the video game industry's biggest fairs. But even the ultra-connected industry is eyeing the innovation warily, with fears growing that jobs could be made redundant and artistic creations usurped. "AI is really a turning point," according to Julien Millet, an AI engineer and founder of United Bits Game studio, who attended the industry fair this week. Responsive non-playable characters or the automatic generation of images, code and game scenarios are among the possible uses for developers using AI.AI is also capable of instantly producing illustrations from text, allowing producers to better "transmit their vision", according to Millet...

[ad_1] Taiwanese semiconductor giant TSMC posted better-than-expected third-quarter profits on Friday as rivals warn that demand for consumer electronics is being hit by the global economic downturn. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company operates the world's largest silicon wafer factories and produces some of the most advanced microchips used in everything from smartphones and cars to missiles. Revenue for September was approximately TW$208.25 billion ($6.6 billion), down 4.5 percent from the month before but an increase of 36 percent from September last year. Third-quarter revenue at the world's largest contract chipmaker also rose 48 percent on-year to about TW$613 billion ($19.4 billion), according to Bloomberg News calculations.
