The name of karela or bitter gourd is enough to make people cringe. It won’t be a gross exaggeration to say that this vegetable has the throne for being one of the most unlikeable vegetables. Also known as bitter melon, or Momordica Charantia, karela gets its bad reputation from its bitter taste. But do you know bitter gourd is “your truest friend”? Well, the grocery delivery app Swiggy Instamart has just the quirkiest way to explain it to the world. It all began when a Twitter user ordered packets of caramel popcorn from the app, on Friendship Day. Singer Paushali Sahu was surprised to receive a bitter gourd and a letter along with her order. She shared the picture of the letter with the vegetable alongside and we can bet that this time bitter gourd won’t make you cringe but instead bring a smile to your face.

Hinting at the health benefits of karela, the letter from the app comprised a life lesson about how we often push away the ones who want the best for us, just like the bitter gourd. The line read, “It’s often the ones we push away who want the best for us… Like this bitter gourd. Your truest friend is…The one who never sugarcoats things for you. The one who shows their affection in not-so-affectionate ways. The one who calls you out, even if it means you won’t call them for weeks. Rough on the outside, they are often misunderstood. But they are good for you and always will be. Even if you don’t like to admit it.” The letter concluded by saying, “This Friendship Day, let’s celebrate the bitter gourds in our lives… cause they make better friends.”

The user shared the post by claiming that it is one of the “weirdest”, friendship day campaigns she has come across. The tweet along with the picture of the letter read, “The weirdest Friendship Day campaign ever! Swiggy sent me a bitter gourd with the caramel popcorn packets I ordered yesterday…”

A comment read, “Now what can you make with one small bitter gourd? At least 250 gms should have been sent! BTW, bitter gourd is one of my favourite veggies!”

To which, Paushali Sahu responded, “One is enough.. eww.”
