1. It is high in protein

Chanal dal is a great source of vegetarian protein. It can curb your hunger pangs and keep you well-nourished. The addition of besan further enhances the protein content of this snack.

2. It is rich in vitamins and minerals

Along with chana dal, this tikki also contains the goodness of cabbage, carrots, ginger and coriander. These ingredients are packed with many vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, essential for your overall health.

3. It requires less oil

This tikki requires only a small amount of oil, as it is pan-fried, not deep-fried. You may also choose to bake it. Thus, you can rest assured that you are not eating a snack that is too high in calories.

4. It may aid in weight loss and blood sugar control

Since this tikki is high in fibre and protein, it promotes satiety and may help manage blood sugar levels too. This makes it a good snacking option for those wanting to lose weight and/or those suffering from diabetes. The main ingredients – chana dal, cabbage, carrots, coriander and besan – are all considered to be diet-friendly.

Wash and soak chana dal for a few hours. Later, drain the water and grind the dal until you get a thick paste. Transfer this paste to a large bowl. Then add chopped cabbage, carrot, green chillies and coriander leaves to it. Also add spice powders, chaat masala and salt to taste. Now, in a small pan or vessel for tadka, heat oil and temper cumin seeds and chopped ginger. Mix this tadka with the chanal dal mixture in the bowl. Finally, combine everything well with roasted besan.

Break off small pieces of the mixture and flatten them into circular shapes. Pan-fry the tikkis until both sides turn golden brown. Enjoy them hot with fresh mint (pudina) chutney.
