Uber Technologies Inc. said it’s investigating a “cybersecurity incident” after an apparent hack led it to shut down some internal communications.
The company said on Twitter it’s contacted law enforcement, without elaborating. It’s unclear whether the incident affected Uber’s ride-hailing or food delivery services around the world.
Uber employees on Thursday received a Slack message from an unknown person claiming to have hacked into its databases, the New York Times reported, citing two unidentified employees. The perpetrator had compromised a staff member’s Slack account and used it to send the message, the Times added.
Uber has run afoul of hackers before. It paid $148 million to settle claims related to a large-scale data breach that exposed the personal information of more than 25 million of its U.S. users in 2016.
