Broadcom Expects AI Demand to Help Offset Weakness Elsewhere

[ad_1] Broadcom Inc., a chip supplier for Apple Inc. and other big tech companies, predicted that AI spending would fuel growth more quickly than expected this year, even as sluggish demand in other areas weighs on semiconductor sales. The company's semiconductor division posted revenue of $7.39 billion in the fiscal first quarter, Broadcom said Thursday, missing the $7.7 billion projected by analysts. Still, the chipmaker remains on track for $50 billion in sales during fiscal 2024, which ends in October. That's in line with its previous forecast. Broadcom and VMWare Say $61 Billion Deal Will Close ‘Soon’

[ad_1]  Broadcom Inc. said on Monday that it expects its $61 billion deal to buy software maker VMware Inc. to close before a November deadline, working to reassure investors amid concerns that a slowdown in China's review process could quash the deal. Broadcom and VMware didn't say how close they might be to an approval from Chinese regulators — the last major hurdle to closing the deal, but they said in a statement on Monday that there is “no legal impediment” to closing under US merger regulations. The deal agreement between the companies expires on Nov. 26.  If the merger is terminated because the takeover doesn't gain regulatory approvals in time, Broadcom may be on the hook for a $1.5 billion termination fee under the terms of the agreement. Chips from its SiliconOne series are being tested by five of the six major cloud providers, Cisco said, without naming the firms. Key cloud players include Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, which together dominate the market for cloud computing, according to Bofa Global Research. The rising popularity of AI applications such as ChatGPT, which is powered by a network of specialized chips called graphics processing units (GPUs), has made the speed at which these individual chips communicate extremely important. Cisco is a major supplier of networking equipment including ethernet switches, which connect devices such a...
