A student of the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) shared on social media that he found a dead frog in his hostel meal. The student, identified as Aaryansh, turned to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to recount his harrowing experience, prompting an outpouring of reactions from fellow users. “This is KIIT Bhubaneswar, ranked 42 among engineering colleges in India, where parents pay approx 17.5 lakhs to get their child an engineering degree. This is the food being served at the college hostel. Then we wonder why students from India migrate to other countries for better education and facilities,” Aaraynsh wrote in the post. He also shared a picture of his thali and spilt food with the dead frog covered in it.

Responding to the mounting outrage, KIIT took notice of the situation and, in an effort to address the matter, issued a notice stipulating a one-day deduction in payment to the hostel food provider as a punitive measure.
Shortly after his initial post, Aaryansh updated his followers on a circular released by the institute on September 23. The circular, directed at the mess contractor, acknowledged the “totally unhygienic” nature of the food being served and expressed dissatisfaction voiced by students regarding their lunch. Furthermore, it declared, “Therefore, one day’s payment for (breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner) food items is hereby deducted as a token of punishment since this concerns the boarders’ health and hygiene. Further, you are WARNED to be very much careful while preparing food for the boarders of your allotted hostels. You are again instructed to keep your kitchen, store and food quality hygiene.”

Aaryansh’s subsequent post lamented the institution’s response, “So, this is the value of human life. The hostel where the frog was served, at Bhubaneswar University, in an attempt to do damage control, decided to deduct only one day’s payment from the mess provider company! Just wow.”
The tweets received many comments from the users. Take a look at some of the reactions:
