West Indies fast bowler Shamar Joseph had a horrible start to his IPL career as he ended up conceding 47 runs in 4 overs including a massive 22 runs in the opening over of the match. Joseph, who played his first game for Lucknow Super Giants, was taken to the cleaners by Kolkata Knight Riders batters and looked completely clueless on an Eden Gardens pitch that had little assistance for bowlers. The final delivery of his first over costed him 15 runs as he bowled 2 no-balls, 2 wides and it ended with Phil Salt slamming him for a huge six over long-off to add on to his misery.

Joseph conceded 7 runs in his first 5 deliveries and although Yash Thakur missed a catch on the final ball, it would not have mattered as the bowler overstepped. Joseph tried to bowl wide of the off-stump but ended up conceding a wide followed by another wide that resulted in a boundary.

Things got worse for the young cricketer as his next attempt was also a no-ball due to overstepping and the over finally ended with that single ball costing the bowler and his side 15 runs.

Following the match, LSG captain KL Rahul opened up about Shamar Joseph and his struggles.

“One of those days, it was a proper hammering. Games like these are tough to digest and we have seen in IPL and every team goes through that. We will try and work out what went wrong and come back better. The ball started nipping around a lot more in the second innings, the shots that we played in the first innings, didn’t execute well and kept losing wickets in bunches and we could have got a lot more runs and that’s where we missed and lost the game,” Rahul explained.

“He (Shamar Joseph) is bowling pretty quick, Shamar was very excited and wanted to bowl fast, sprayed it around a little bit but that happens when you are playing your first game in the IPL. He needs to work on consistency in line and length, obviously got the ball to swing and seam around in the powerplay. Not panicking (about back-to-back losses), need to figure out where we went wrong and the last couple of games we haven’t been able to get past 160 and that’s something we want to see and be better at it,” he added.

Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Lucknow Super Giants by 8 wickets in their IPL 2024 encounter.
