When it comes to winter foods, we can’t help but indulge. And it seems only fair! Our warming treats are the only things that keep us motivated to get through the day in the midst of the chilly air, the thick blanket of fog that surrounds us, and the dreary days. So, if you’ve been bingeing, you’re not alone. On the other hand, overindulging during the winter months can result in significant weight gain. This, in turn, can cause issues for those attempting to lose weight. Now the question is, how can you stay warm and comfortable during these chilly days without packing on the pounds? Well, broths can be the perfect solution for this. As per consultant nutrition Rupali Datta, “What you eat during the winter is extremely important in combating the cold outside. Certain foods have the ability to naturally generate heat in the body. As a result, for the season, one must customise the pantry and include winter-friendly foods.”
For the uninitiated, chicken broth is made with chicken flesh and bones, simmered on the stove for a short period of time. It has a light chicken flavour and is ideal for the winter months. Let’s learn how to make it.
Chicken Broth Recipe: How To Make Chicken Broth
- To prepare this, all you require are some easily available ingredients such as chicken pieces, carrot, onion, water, and some spices and herbs like bay leaves, rosemary, dried thyme, peppercorns and more.
- In a soup kettle, combine all of the ingredients. Add enough water, bring to a boil slowly, then reduce heat to a low simmer. Simmer for 1-2 hours, uncovered, skimming foam as needed.
- Set aside the chicken until it is cool enough to handle. Remove the meat from the bones and then remove the bones and save the meat for another use.
- Once done, remove the vegetables and seasonings from the broth and set aside. Refrigerate for at least 4-5 hours or overnight. Using a ladle, large spoon, or skimmer, remove any fat and scum from the surface.
Please note: Broth can be kept in the fridge for up to five days. If the broth hasn’t been used in five days, bring it to a boil before using it.
