Rich, crunchy and nutty – almonds are not just delicious, but are packed with various health benefitting properties. According to health experts, almonds are rich in protein, vitamins, antioxidants and other essential nutrients that help promote overall health. In fact, different studies from across the world have found that almonds are good of eyes, skin, heart health and also boost immunity. Adding to the benefits, a recent study has found that snacking on almonds is good for your gut health too. The findings of the study were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

For the study, the researchers at King’s College London analysed 87 healthy adults, who consumed low amount of fibre and “snacked on processed foods like chocolate and crisps”. These people were divided into three groups – the first group replaced their daily snacks with 56 grams of whole almonds, the second group consumed 56 grams of ground almonds and the third group (the control group) had muffins that included same number of calories.

It was found that the group who ate almonds had increased potassium level and higher amount of butyrates in the gut. For the unversed, almonds are loaded with lipids, fibre and polyphenols that help increase the production of butyrates – a fatty acid responsible for healthy guts. It further helps regulate bowel movement and eliminates issues like constipation, indigestion et al.

“Almond consumption has limited impact on gut microbiota composition but increases butyrate concentrations in adults, suggesting positive alterations to microbiota functionality. Almonds can be incorporated into the diet to increase fibre consumption without triggering gut symptoms,” reads the study.

Considering the above factors, we suggest, include almonds in your daily diet for overall good health. But always remember, moderation is the key!
