Not for nothing is MS Dhoni the ultimate benchmark of unorthodoxy in cricket. Be it is batting style or his wicketkeeping prowess, nothing about Dhoni is traditional. The way he batted with innovative shots like the ‘helicopter shot’ made his batting look unusual but highly effective. The same can be said about his wicketkeeping. He had an unorthodox way of affecting run-outs as he did not garb the ball with both hands but instead used the ball’s speed to direct it in the direction of the stumps.
A similar dismissal was seen once again in the IPL 2024, this time from Sanju Samson. Playing against Punjab Kings, the Rajasthan Royals skipper affected a run out of England’s Liam Livingstone. The stykle of Samson’s throw was so very similar to that of Dhoni’s that even the official website of the IPL called it ‘Dhoni-esque’.

Sanju Samson is one of the contenders for a spot in India’s T20 World Cup squad as wicketkeeper-batter. The Indian squad for the T20 World Cup is likely to be announced in the last week of April. While KL Rahul is almost certain to find a place in the 15-member squad, there are several options when it comes to the second choice for the role.
Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan are all prominent options for the team management with youngster Jitesh Sharma impressing in the past year as well. However, legendary Australia cricketer Adam Gilchrist believes that there is one clear choice for the selectors while selecting the T20 World Cup squad.
“I expect Rishabh Pant to be there definitely. And I would take Sanju Samson as well. Kishan is pushing a very good case, no doubt about that. But I think Rishabh Pant, if he is not locked in, he should be locked in,” Gilchrist said on Cricbuzz.
