Apple Watch saves pregnant woman, unborn baby, during emergency

Apple Watch helped a pregnant woman by sending an alert about her abnormally high heart rate.

Apple Watch has emerged as a life-saving gadget yet again! A pregnant woman in the US named Jesse Kelly claims that Apple Watch saved her and her unborn baby’s life in an emergency as it warned her about an abnormally high heart rate. Notably, Apple Watch has several health monitoring features, including heart rate monitoring, blood oxygen monitoring, ECG, and a lot more. All of these help users to track their health issues on a daily basis. In many emergency situations, these features have proved to be life-savers.

That is exactly what happened to Jess Kelly. She keeps a track of her exercise regimen on her Apple Watch and this ultimately saved her and her unborn baby. On December 17, 2022, when Kelly wasn’t feeling well in her 37th week of pregnancy, she received a notification of a high heart rate on her smartwatch. It notified that her “heart rate had been above 120 beats per minute, while inactive for more than 10 minutes,” abc7 reported. Within half an hour she received notifications two more times. After that, she was rushed to the hospital where doctors informed her that she was suffering from a placental abruption. The situation occurs when the placenta separates from the inner wall of the uterus before giving birth.

However, the report didn’t mention which Apple Watch helped Kelly. But the heart rate notifications feature is seeded on several Apple Watches such as Watch SE, Watch 7, and the latest Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra. It must be noted that the normal heart rate is between 60 and 100 per minute, abc7 said quoting Dr. Brian Kim, an electrophysiologist with Providence St. Jude Medical Center. He further mentioned that there can be several reasons behind high heart rate such as dehydration or anxiety.

Kelly was not the only fortunate one as a few days ago, a UK woman called Elain Thompson, too credited an Apple Watch of saving her life with its health tracking feature. She got an irregular heart rhythm notification from her Apple Watch too, which prompted her to immediately rush to a doctor who managed to bring her health condition back to normal.
